Cautious hedonism in a time of conditional security
Prints by Lana Korolievskaia
70 x 100 cm • Digital
This collage combines the ink drawing "Girl and dragon" (2024) and the oil painting "Butterfly Dance" (2018). The black and white outline of the first painting,
personifying logic, coexists perfectly with the multi-colored spontaneity of the second painting - just like in the yin-yang philosophy, which is so beloved in
Eastern countries. Taken separately, "Butterfly Dance" was a manifesto of hedonism, calling for a beautiful and joyful life,
while there is an opportunity, instead of wasting time on sadness and despondency.
"Girl and dragon" expressed the need to appease aggressive forces so that they do not destroy a person. It is impossible to defeat them, but it is quite possible to
lull their vigilance. Therefore, the girl plays a charming melody on her flute, which makes the dragon swoon.
Together, these two semantic vectors show that someone can have fun while someone else monitors the situation and provides conditional safety.
